TERA: Delayed Into 2012

TERA: Fast-action fantasy MMO TERA has been pushed into Spring 2012 according to publisher En Masse Entertainment. The game was originally expected to launch within the next month or three but apparently the developers, Bluehole Studios, wish to apply another sturdy coat of polish before release. Disappointing – but almost always a wise decision.

Read the official details from TERA’s North American producer Chris “Chager” Hager – “early 2012? Beta news is also on tap. Actually, there isn’t word of a “delay” from the devs. They seem to imply this launch timing was the plan all along.

Here we see the devs polishing up a typical mob
“Later this year we will begin our alpha testing. For those who aren’t yet familiar with this term, alpha testing is essentially small-scale testing with people outside the company, with the goal of collecting feedback on specific game features. An alpha test has the added benefit of allowing our internal teams to practice running a game in a “live” environment, so when the beta phase starts in early 2012, TERA will be operating like a well-oiled machine.”

Army of North Korean Hackers Target Online Gaming

It seems North Korea’s economy and leader, Kim Jong-il, are getting desperate to raise some seriously needed cash and are now targeting MMO games as a source of funding. The New York Times recently reported that North Korea is training an army of hackers to create and use software that can basically “allows round-the-clock play by “factories” of dozens of unmanned computers“. Some of the titles targeted were Lineage and Dungeon and Fighter, which is Dungeon Fighter Online in the west.

The items and in-game currency was then exchanged for cash via third-party MMO black market sites that deal with real-money-transactions. The software itself is also sold to other hackers as another revenue source.
One such group made over $6 million in a two year time span and was able to keep 55% of it, which is quite surprising that the government let them keep that much.

So next time you see some bot gold farming, it could be a North Korean hacker agent working for the government, so make sure to report them. This is war people!

Sorry “City of Transformers” You’re Not a Transformers MMO Just Because You Put it in the Title

Today I received a press release from Destiny Development about their upcoming MMORPG City of Transformers, not to be confused with Hasbro’s Transformers Universe. I was actually thrown when I saw it as I began to wonder, how could I have not heard about a second Transformers MMO until now?

I then saw MMORPG.com post the press release stating that it takes place in “an ‘alternative’ Transformers universe”…Ok, so I checked out the CoT website and no where could I find any mention that this game takes place in an alternative universe, however I did notice this line,
It is set upon the world of a distant planet, Amicron, that once survived a bloody war with Quintessons.
Quintessons are aliens from the Transformers universe, which in the TV series, are the creators of the Transformers and if you’re old enough you’ll remember them as the alien with five faces. So it seems that City of Transformers is based off Transformers lore and MMORPG.com had it right.

I went to find out more only to learn that in this Transformers MMO, you aren’t a Transformer. Instead your a human that has the ability to control a machine, called a Transformer, to aid you in combat.

I seriously doubt Hasbro gave them permission to use the Transformers trademark when they are currently in the process of creating their own game, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the next thing we hear out of CoT is that they’re being sued by Hasbro.

Update on Torchlight MMO

In an interview with Eurogamer, CEO of Runic Game’s, Max Schaefer gave a brief statement updating us on where the Torchlight Online MMO was and when we can expect to hear more about it.

That’s obviously still in the plan. But is it the next thing or is it something beyond that? We just don’t know. We have a lot of good ideas for the MMO, we just aren’t committing to any kind of schedule yet. If Torchlight 2 blows up on PC and it’s the biggest thing since sliced bread we’ll probably want to give more attention to that before heading into the MMO world.

So there you have it, maybe soon or maybe much later. Regardless of whether Torchlight 2 does well or not, it looks like it’ll be years before we see a Torchlight MMO.

MegaServers On Their Way to DC Universe Online

MegaServers are on their way to DC Universe Online this Monday allowing for much larger player populations. The new MegaServers will combine the current servers allowing for more players in cites, combat area, alerts, raid zones and pretty much everywhere else.

Aside from the obvious increase in player populations, the new servers will be arranged in “Phases”, with each server having a minimum of one PvE and PvP Phases. However there could be multiple Phases on each server which leads to a scenario where friends or guildmates are on different Phases. Thankfully there is a simple solution for players who can just select the Phase they want to be on.

Name changes will be required for some as some players might have the same name as someone else.  Those players who’s names are changed will receive a free name change token so they can update it to something else if they don’t like the new name they got. This goes the same for clan or League names.

Server will go down for the mergers for about 10-14 hrs with the schedule posted below.

  • EU PC    8/8/2011                     8:00AM PT/4:00PM
  • CETUS PC    8/10/2011            8:00AM PT/4:00PM
  • CETUS PS3  8/11/2011            8:00AM PT/4:00PM
  • CETEU PS3  8/15/2011            8:00AM PT/4:00PM CET

This will consolidate all servers into just 4 MegaServers. I wish every MMO did this.

World of Warplanes Official Website Launched

Wargaming.net launched the official website for World of Warplanes featuring the first in-game screenshots of their upcoming WWII combat flight sim MMO game.

World of Warplanes will take place in the same era as Wargaming’s other military MMO game World of Tanks and will feature a wide range of warbirds. Pilots can choose from three main warplane classes – single-engine light fighters capable of engaging enemies in close dogfights, heavy fighters with their deadly straight attacks, and strafing aircrafts, the fearsome threat for ground targets.

Players will be able to build virtual pilot careers and fly planes from several key eras, staring from 1930’s with biplanes and up to Korean War jet fighters that led the way to modern air forces.

Every plane will feature multiple variations of ammo types, engines, and other crucial modules, and their various combinations will allow to pick the optimal configuration for the most effective behavior in combat.
After the jump you can view the first in-game screenshots of WoWP. (I was going to use WoW, but I think some other MMO already uses that )
